Overview

The Climb Experience

The 6 Days Umbwe Route is one of the most challenging and adventurous ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Known for its steep ascent and dramatic landscapes, the Umbwe Route is ideal for experienced hikers seeking a more demanding and less crowded trekking experience. The route passes through dense rainforest, rugged ridges, alpine desert, and glacier zones before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895m.

Although the Umbwe Route is physically demanding due to its rapid ascent, it offers breathtaking scenery and an exciting adventure for climbers with good fitness and determination. The route later joins the Machame Route, allowing climbers to benefit from better acclimatization before the summit attempt.

Day 1: Arrival in Kilimanjaro

900m1 hour

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our team and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Day 2

Day 2: Umbwe Gate (1,600m) to Umbwe Cave Camp (2,940m)

2,940m11 km5–7 hours

After breakfast, you will drive to Umbwe Gate for registration before starting your climb through the lush rainforest zone. The trail is steep and narrow, passing through dense forest with giant trees, colorful birds, and beautiful vegetation. This route is quieter and more remote than many other Kilimanjaro routes, offering a true wilderness trekking experience from the beginning. Dinner and overnight at Umbwe Cave Camp.

Day 3

Day 3: Umbwe Cave Camp (2,940m) to Barranco Camp (3,976m)

3,976m6 km4–6 hours

Today the trail leaves the rainforest and enters the moorland zone. As you ascend along ridges and valleys, you will enjoy incredible views of Kilimanjaro’s glaciers, cliffs, and volcanic landscapes. The route joins the Machame Route near Barranco Valley, one of the most scenic areas on the mountain surrounded by giant senecio plants and impressive cliffs. Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp.

Day 4

Day 4: Barranco Camp (3,976m) to Karanga Camp (3,995m)

After breakfast, you begin by climbing the famous Barranco Wall. Although steep in appearance, this section is non-technical and manageable with the support of your guide. This shorter hiking day helps improve acclimatization while allowing time for rest before the summit ascent. Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp.

Day 5

Day 5: Karanga Camp (3,995m) to Barafu Camp (4,673m)

4,673m4 km3–4 hours

Today you hike steadily toward Barafu Camp, the final base camp before your summit attempt. The landscape becomes rocky, dry, and alpine with colder temperatures and thinner air. Around midnight, you begin your summit attempt under the stars. The climb is physically demanding, but reaching Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, is an unforgettable achievement. At sunrise, you will enjoy breathtaking views above the clouds and celebrate your successful summit before beginning your descent. After descending to Barafu Camp for a short rest, you continue down to Millennium Camp for overnight stay. This is the most challenging but also the most rewarding day of the climb. Dinner and overnight at Millennium Camp.

Day 7

Day 7: Millennium Camp (3,790m) to Mweka Gate (1,630m)

1,630m12 km4–5 hours

You will then be transferred back to your hotel in Moshi for a hot shower, relaxation, and celebration. We also welcome you to spare an hour of your day to plant a tree as part of our environmental conservation efforts in the Kilimanjaro region. Safari and Zanzibar add-ons are available if you wish to continue exploring Tanzania.

Day 8

Day 8: Departure in Tanzania

After breakfast, depending on your flight schedule, you will be transferred to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward journey home. For travelers wishing to continue exploring Tanzania, this is also the perfect opportunity to extend your adventure with a safari to Serengeti National Park, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire National Park, or the beautiful beaches of Zanzibar.
